Fresh cut flowers in the bedroom help capture the endless summer feeling.  Waking up with bright and colourful flowers bedside, is such a cheerful way to experience and celebrate the season.  Likewise, if the last thing you see when you close your eyes at night is a vase filled with summer blooms, happy dreams ought to follow.

Zinnias.  Old garden favourites, zinnias are a type of annual flower which bloom continuously during the summer until the first frost.  The showy flowers are found in shades of red, pink, rose, orange, yellow, lavender, green and white.  Zinnias grow best in full sun conditions and are perfect for fresh bouquets, as the more blooms which are snipped from these plants, the more flowers they produce.

These zinnias were found at a seasonal farmers’ market just before closing time.  Maybe it was because they matched the romper I was wearing or maybe because zinnias remind me of my Grandfather and his love of gardening, but in any case these flowers had to come home.  The plan was to use them as a surprise “Thank You” gift.

The brilliant colours of this bouquet made choosing where to enjoy these flowers in the home easy.  The calm and neutral colours of this bedroom are the perfect backdrop to showcase pops of colour.  To start, the warm white linens on the cane bed are soft, inviting and flawlessly offset the lively trimmings.  The cotton accent pillow placed in the center of the bed is printed with dahlia flowers in warm shades.  Another coordinating accessory in the bedroom décor is the Blessing Basket from Ghana placed on the chest of drawers in front of a beveled mirror.  The painting Tea for Two During the Weekend by French-Canadian artist Claudette Castonguay is one more point of interest in the scheme.

I love the quote “A beautiful day begins with a beautiful mindset” and think these zinnias are a special way to start the day and are some sunshine for the soul.
